The National Architecture Competition for the 1911 Expo: urban solutions and buildings in the area of expansion beyond the Tiber and Prati di Castello

Rome’s Mayor Ernesto Nathan grasped the opportunity of the International Expo set for 1911, in celebration of unified Italy’s 50th anniversary, to build three new neighbourhoods on the right side of the Tiber river: Prati, Della Vittoria and Trionfale.

The buildings were designed via a national architectural competition divided into three categories: houses, residential buildings for the middle classes and social housing. In only two years – before the Expo opened – bridges, streets, squares and green areas were made. These neighbourhoods still exist today and continue to be appreciated for their excellent design.
